GIANT HYPERMARKET is a major supermarket and retailer chain in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. It is a subsidiary of Dairy Farm International (DFI) .

Giant is a 60-year old Malaysian brand built on its ability to deliver low prices everyday to consumers, which started by the Teng family as a simple grocery store in one of the suburbs of Kuala Lumpur in 1944. Its mission was to offer a wide variety of products at the lowest possible prices. As its reputation grew, so did its business.

DFI, which acquired Giant in 1999, recognised that the key to Giant’s success had been its ability to continuously offer value for money products. It retained this core principle even as it began transforming Giant into a national and international brand.

Today, after six years of intensive efforts which included redesigning the stores, the introduction of the non-food products into the Giant hypermarkets, the implementation of international retail standards that includes safety, cleanliness, structured training and a vibrant shopping environment as well as centralized buying functions and improved operations, DFI has made Giant the undisputed leader in Malaysia’s retail sector.

DFI currently operates a total of 220 stores, comprising Giant hypermarket and supermarkets, Guardian pharmacies and Cold Storage supermarkets. Most of which mushroomed in the last six years.

The chain also includes 6 stores in Singapore and 17 hypermarkets in Indonesia. Giant hypermarkets offer a wide range of local merchandise, such as fresh local fruits, vegetables, and seafood within a wet market environment (http://www.giant.com.my/en-US/About+Us).

On this date March 22, 2008, the first Giant Hypermarket in Brunei Darussalam has opened its door at Kg Rimba.

I heard from a colleague that there was a very long queue along the highway and he also said that his friend was unable to go home for lunch as his house was on the same road to the Giant. WOW! I was so surprised to hear about it. He (my colleague) said "Iatah orang Brunei tu..." without explained it further and I assumed I understood what he meant......

So happy shopping & Welcome to Brunei, GIANT!
